CRICKET TRIBAND AREAS AND FLASHED PHONES

You've probably heard of a flashed phone, but may not not know what that term means. A flashed phone is a phone that has been converted to work from one carrier to another. In regards to Cricket, the phone has been converted from Alltel, Sprint, or Verizon to work on the Cricket network. The two most popular smartphones to flash are Android or Blackberry Phones.
If you are thinking of purchasing a flashed phone, there are a few things you need to know before you make that purchase. Both types of phones can be flashed for text, talk, picture messaging, and web. The android phone has the advantage of being able to utilize all the apps from the android marketplace. It's one drawback is that it requires the $55.00/month smartphone plan to utilize. The Blackberry is better equipted for the serious text messenger. The Blackberry can not easily use any of the Apps designed for it without some serious programming. The upside is that you can use a flashed Blackberry on any of the data plans.
Before you make that purchase, you will want to make sure that you are not in a Cricket Tri-band area. A number of years ago to expand its network, Cricket purchased a higher wireless spectrum that required the transmission of three frequiences (hence being referred to as Tri-band). Alltel, Sprint, and Verizon require two frequincies to operate. Therefore, their handsets are only built to transmit and receive at two frequiences and lack the third to operate properly in these Cricket Tri-band areas. If you are unsure if you are in a standard or a Tri-band area, you can check the coverage map at www.mycricket.com. Type in your zip code, and if any diagonal lines appear, you are in a Tri-band area. If so, you will need to purchase a smartphone designed originally for the Cricket network.
